“Microsoft—in a nutshell—is a company that had one successful product that we are all beholden to—that then used that capital to buy other people’s products and ruin them. They are not bad people, but they do stab their friends in the back. Also, they are a bunch of nerds, which is probably why they have never managed to produce a decent interface.

Apple is a company that produces amazing, human-usable products. I love them for the same reason I love any such company, and I forgive them their eccentricities because their products are so amazing. They make decisions that I’m told are bad for me, yet I don’t see that reflected in their products as I use them.”

I can’t totally agree. It’ not as if people would realize why everybody is so concerned with Microsoft & Google, either. I think it’s the exact same situation with Apple.
But I have to agree that their products do kick a**, which makes it really hard not to use them.
Don’t want to support Microsoft by using Windows? There’s plenty alternatives like Ubuntu Linux.
Don’t want to support Google by using Google search & Google maps? There’s ixquick waiting for you & open street map.
Don’t want to support Apple by using a Macbook? I can’t see any alternatives from the perspective of a developer yet, since these systems are really located in a whole other league than the rest of the market.
Of course, there’s plenty alternatives for their phones, tablets & mp3-players (old fashioned expression for iPods). That’s just marketing & consumer behavior.
But when it comes to a laptop-system-software-symbiosis, I see no alternative.
I like the noble goal of fighting proprietary like pdf, flash, .net and whatever.
Nonetheless, their efforts to do so by pushing proprietary apple solutions instead (objective-c, h.264, what will be next?) is really getting in my nerves. I can’t see the noble spirit in that, which is a main point for my sympathy for Apple as a company is decreasing fast.
